SEO basics for a small business website

Understand discovery, indexing and ranking, then check your pages without relying on keyword tricks.

Separate the three stages

Discovery means Google knows a URL exists. Crawling means it visits that URL. Indexing means the page is included in its search index. Ranking determines where an eligible page appears for a particular query. A page can be crawled successfully and still not be indexed.

Search Console helps distinguish these stages. A zero-click report does not by itself mean that every page is missing from Google.

Inspect the page that matters

Start with the homepage, then a service page relevant to the customers you want. Check the last crawl, fetch result, indexing permission and canonical URL in URL Inspection. The canonical is the preferred version when similar content appears at multiple addresses.

Use the live test when the site has changed since the recorded crawl. A successful test indicates technical accessibility; it does not promise inclusion or first position. Read Google’s URL Inspection documentation for the limits of the report.

Connect useful pages with normal links

Link to service pages from relevant navigation or descriptions. Use labels that explain the destination. A guide that exists only inside a button-triggered pop-up is harder to share than an independent page with a normal link.

A sitemap helps communicate your preferred URLs. Keep it aligned with live pages, but do not treat submitting it as a guarantee that every listed URL will be indexed. See Google’s link guidance.

Write content that answers a decision

For a maintenance page, explain the tasks, exclusions, reporting process and access requirements. For restaurant design, explain menus, opening hours and how a reservation request reaches the business. These details are more useful than repeating a city name across nearly identical pages.

Use accurate titles and descriptions. Publish project evidence with permission and distinguish a design demonstration from a measured customer outcome.

Track a small set of relevant queries

Separate searches for your business name from broader service searches. In Search Console, compare equal date ranges with the same country, device and query filters. Record impressions, clicks and average position, and note significant website changes.

Review trends over several weeks rather than repeatedly searching and clicking your own listing. Google does not guarantee first position: its SEO Starter Guide explains the fundamentals and realistic expectations.
